Why do SMS Messages Have a Character Limit?
The character limitations in SMS messages ensure the networks' efficient compatibility and transmission. Standard SMS uses what is called 7-bit encoding, allowing up to 160 characters to be included per message. If you decide to include special characters or non-Latin languages, a Unicode is implemented, which in turn, reduces the character limitation to 70 characters.
Understanding Message Encoding
Message coding is simply how human-readable formats are modified into convenient ways for phones to send over cellular networks. There are two main types of SMS encoding as mentioned above:
7-bit encoding: Works best with English and other Latin-based languages.
Unicode encoding: Covers a wider range of characters, languages, and emojis. Unicode encoding counts for multiple characters in SMS messages.
If you wish to send longer messages or rich media content, we'd recommend considering RCS Messaging as an alternative.
Multipart SMS Messages
If your message text is longer than 160 using 7-bit encoding or 70 using Unicode encoding, the message will automatically split into multiple message parts and reassembled upon receipt. Due to reassembly, a data header must be added which reduces the length of each message part to the below:
153 characters for 7-bit encoding
67 characters for Unicode
While this feature allows for longer messages, it increases the per-message cost since each message part is billed separately. LINK Mobility supports long SMS messages, but it is recommended to keep them within 10 message parts to maintain the best deliverability and user experience.
Best Practices for SMS Messaging
Keep Messages Clear and Concise
Ensure your text is easy to read and understand. Clear and straightforward SMS messages ensure that your message is understood quickly and effectively.
Be Mindful of Emoji Use
Emojis can enhance communication and appeal to your target audience. However, using emojis switches your message to Unicode encoding, which reduces the character limit to 70 per SMS segment.
Segment Your Audience
Tailor messages to different groups for more relevant SMS communication. This ensures that each segment receives content that is most relevant to their interests, situation and needs.
Include a Clear Call to Action
Encourage recipients to engage with your message. Make sure the desired action is straightforward and easy to follow.
Keep Your Message Short
To ensure optimal deliverability and a positive user experience, it is recommended to keep your messages within 10 parts. While more parts are possible, staying within this recommended limit is optimal for your SMS messaging performance.
Utilize the Character Count Wisely
Aim for impactful messaging within the character limits. Prioritize key information to ensure your message is both effective and concise.
